My day at the Wright’s Law Conference in Columbus, Ohio forever changed me. I highly recommend that anyone who even remotely desires to go, attend by all means!
The day at the conference was a dream come true for me. In this post, I will explain why and you will find why you need to get to one as well.
I have longed to understand special education for several years. With three children in special education, you’d think I would know all about it. However, the whole field is blurry to me.
There are so many abbreviations, documents, and people involved. Frankly, it makes my head swirl. My dream came true at the conference.
There, I received books to empower me as a parent. Peter Wright, the keynote speaker, and founder of Wrights law Special Education, gave us a day long assignment of highlighting what we would readily need.
I left feeling so prepared to advocate for my three children. Fully empowered is what the day made me feel.
The day brought about ten people at each table in a big banquet hall. Our conference was sponsored by our local Down Syndrome Association. Most of the people at our table were parents, county administrators, and a few paraprofessionals.
Sadly, some of the women at my table hated Peter Wright’s stories. They detested highlighting in their books. These women got up and left early from my table. I found this very rude. It saddened my heart.
By the ending of the day, there was only me and another mom at our table. I moved closer to her. We have ended up staying in contact ever since.
I also met several other moms who I have also kept in touch with. This day brought more than just information, hearts were joined.
The day inspired me. To see several hundred adults in a big room all joined together by the purpose of advocating for children inspired me beyond words.
My own daughter had an ETR (Educational Team Report), the next week, after the conference. I am so happy I spent the day at Wright’s Law.
IEE’s were covered at the conference. This was needed for my daughter. Had I not attended, I’m not sure I would have had the courage to request an IEE(Independent Education Evaluation).
At the conference we were given free coffee (my favorite “F” word) and water. Lunch was provided.
Beyond that, they gave us three nice sized books. I won’t name the books here, in case they change what resources they give to attendees.
We were also given some local resources. Along with this, we were given a very nice highlighter/pen combination. I love this device. It remains in my purse from now on.
Personally, I did not mind highlighting in the books! I even jotted down more notes because I am certain I will need to get to this information quickly.
I work at an Autism Education and Therapy Center currently. My heart’s desire is to be an advocate on staff to come to parent’s at the center’s side to help them access the best services for their children, not just my own Fantastic Four.
I took the conference with a very focused posture. Maybe the other women didn’t feel the need so deeply? My thought was Peter Wright should be respected as he has paved the way for our children in America to be treated better in our public school system.
I listened intently to his stories as they wrenched my heart. Finding similar local situations in my memories kept happening to me as he spoke. So many others needed the information!
If you work in education, if you have a loved one who needs extra support, I urge you to spend a day at Wright’s Law Conference. It is a financial investment, but the takeaway is much greater. I would say the conference is priceless! No amount could be based upon the information you attain there.
